The Accidental Public Servant
The accidental public servant,
Catapaulted to power through means and aids
From a shoeless miscreant
To a brainless tyrant.
Sitted tightly in high places
'Siddon-look' attitude
Spectators in multitude.
Science evolves man from animals,
Philisophers equate man with political animals
From the street named zoology
To the avenue of 'politikology'
No harm done
Still the same field
Only different seeds
Animals inclusive.
When innocent men are sleeping,
They are busy scheming.
"We've ruled for a decade,
We can do it again"
12 years counting...
60 years blasphemy!
"Not even the people's carrier
Can cause traffic jam.
Running on the fast lane
4 years marathon
BRT's yellow lane
Buccaneering Reservoir Transport
Blazing like speed bolt,
Unstoppable feast.
Accidental servant!
Accidental policies!
Accidental deaths!
Stroke is on the rampage
Stroking out names
From the book of 'Living Witnesses'
Witnesses to a demented nation!
I drop my quill in ink
Leaving the spectators stand
Where art thou my brethrens?

DeleteGovernment in Nigeria is a dark art into which only a selected microscopic few ever get initiated. Even as the populace is denied the lowest form of initiative, a fraction of the people complain while the majority lie in total frustration with the popular cliche ' God dey'..
ReplyDelete'The Accidental Public Servant' by Phillips Olyangu is another incisive and thought provoking write up from his polyvalent poetic series. The poem is dedicated to Nigeria's former FCT minister, Mallam Nasir El-rufai who just launched a book of the same title. It is also an allusion of the intrigues and miasma of the typical Nigerian political ambience.
From lines one to ten. The poet tells us about a fisherman who. manoeuvred his way into the corridors of power by virtue of his name 'GoodLUCK' and a doctrine of necessity that was arrived at to prevent the ship of state from an avoidable cataract. The author narrates how the same president claimed to be shoeless during his school days and suddenly became power drunk as soon as he got the mandate of the people to rule. This scenario reflects on Aristotle's theory that man is by nature, a political animal. The poem is full of socio-political satire. Phillips didn't limit himself to the zoologist alone, he transcended to the party he represents. A political party is a band of elitists who conglomerate together with the foremost aim of acquiring power and to see how that power can be deployed either in service of the people or in service of self. In PDP's case, they want to acquire power in service of self. Lines 11 to 20 tells us how the pdp-led administration had sworn to rule country for the next 60 years since they've done it for 13years without hindrances. The poet likens the ruling party to fictitious marathon on a Lagos BRT lane with no traffic jam and that not even the new merger of opposition parties can stop their rulership.. The poet ended his work on a very good note by calling on all Nigerian not to be recumbent speculators but take the form of recusansy either by using their pen as he's currently doing or any other way to ensure their representatives are called to order.
In summary, this is a poem by a fearless brother who has judiciously used his writing prowess to clamor for justice and equity in our social, economic and political life. I doff my cap for you bro!!!
Wow! U just provided my readers with a detailed analysis...#Gratitude.Thanks for taking the time to read, ingest and appreciate my work. I would like to bring to your notice one or two things: the political animal reference was to Jonathan's Phd in Zoology...he was well qualified in leading animals so human being as animals are nt an exception...treating d poor like animals...onli his title changed 4rm Dr to His excellency and although his "field" changed the science of corruption "politikology", the "seeds" remained the ame...."AnimalsInclusive".Nevertheless, nice work.
